Dell Gets in on Kids Netbook Game With Slimy Nick-themed Inspiron Mini

Written on Aug 13, 2009 by Brian and filed under News

As the Disney Netbooksjust start to ship, Dell has announced the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition. Similar to the Disney/Asus effort, the Dell netbook features a Nick-branded shell, which of course means slime, and operating system skins from their big shows like SongeBob and iCarly. Dell has also included extra safety software so parents know kids are only exposed to safe content online.

The Nick Inspiron Mini is Dell’s first computer geared toward kids. It weighs in at under 3 pounds and features a 10.1″ display and built-in wireless. Of course there’s plenty of Nick-branding and content integration. Each Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition features a customizable user interface with Nickelodeon-branded desktop wallpaper and icons that let kids create a unique computing environment. There’s also a Dell-exclusive “Just for You” widget that lets kids select their own dynamically updated content from Nick.com including games and TV programs. For something a little more educational, the netbook inludes content from Whyville.net, where kids can participate in educational activities and games sponsored by organizations like NASA, Scholastic Publishing, the Centers for Disease Control and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

To ease parental concerns about kids working online, the netbook comes with a 15-month subscription to McAfee Family Security, which provides comprehensive parental controls to direct and monitor online activities. The McAfee system is flexible though, allowing parents to ease rules as kids grow. In the event the computer gets stolen, Dell has also included a LoJack subscription that can report its location via the Internet.

The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition will be available in October, exclusively through Dell and Walmart. Pricing has not yet been announced, however this netbook is based on the current Dell Mini 10v, which starts at $299.
