Review: Green Eggs and Ham for Tag Reading System

Written on Mar 7, 2009 by Brian and filed under LeapFrog, Reviews

In late January LeapFrog announced several new books to extend the Tag Reading System platform. One of the new releases is a kid’s classic, Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. We love the Tag Reading System and the Dr. Seuss classics; this latest book release makes for the perfect combination.

Green Eggs and Ham for the Tag Reading System is targeted for kids ages 4-8, though the story tends to transcend age. It’s one of those stories most parents had read to them as kids, so it’s fun to relive those memories. As all of these books do, this one connects to the online Learning Path system and focuses on learning activities that introduce:

  • Character exploration
  • Rhyming
  • Memory skills
  • Critical thinking skills

The format of this book is a little different than the other Tag books we’ve reviewed thus far. Those all had a story followed by learning games at the end. This story doesn’t work that way. Probably because the story is longer than the others, this book just has the audio and the in-story reading comprehension games. There are a bunch of in-story games though, this book has ten, including one at the end that asks kids to answer yes/no comprehension questions from the entire story against a timer.

As noted, the story is long, the entire audio when the reader reads the entire story is 6:35. The longer story is fine, but the problem is the audio file for this story is large, meaning that instead of 5-6 stories saved to your Tag Reader, you might only get 4 with some of these larger book audio files. The Tag Reader is one of our favorite products, but LeapFrog has to find a way to get more memory, or expandable memory, in Tag 2.

As a story though, there’s nothing to complain about with Green Eggs and Ham. You get what you’d expect and while there aren’t any learning games at the end, there is enough interspersed throughout the story that kids will be engaged. While it’s great that LepFrog has books featuring Dora, Lightning McQueen and other modern characters, we have a soft spot for the classics and are glad to see this book and others on the system.
