T. Rex’s Mighty Roar by LeapFrog is designed for the Tag Reading System. The story is about a baby T. Rex who gets separated from his mother and has various misadventures and dinosaur encounters along the way.
As with all Tag books, T. Rex’s Mighty Roar offers a story and learning games. The story in this case is a little short, but it’s fun. We watch baby T. Rex learn that while he will one day be a mighty dinosaur to be feared, that as a youngster he still needs his mother.
This story is different from most other kids dinosaur books however, in that it introduces many uncommon dinosaurs. While there is a brief encounter with a Triceratops, there are several other dinosaur characters that I haven’t seen in many kids books like Alamosaurus, Ankylosaraus, and Troodon. As a parent, I’m glad to see the diversity and my son was interested in the new faces. In total T. Rex’s Mighty Roar covers over 20 dinosaurs, some common, but many not.
The story narration is great, exceeded only by the appropriate background music and sound effects. I continue to be impressed by the quality of the audio tracks that come with each book.
LeapFrog has included three in-story reading comprehension games in addition to four three-level games at the end of the story. The Learning Path activities cover short vowels, suffixes, word building and dinosaur facts. While the book is designed for ages 4-6, older children who enjoy dinosaurs will probably get more out of this book than younger readers. Many of the games even challenged this parent, as I tend to get the less popular dinosaur species mixed up.
Check out the following video to get a feel for the story and various levels of the four game pages at the end of the book.
Bottom Line
While the story is a little brief, the learning games are great and the deep mix of dinosaurs gives children a lot to learn about, increasing the long-term playability of this book.
